Upon graduating from Boston College, Mr. Miller played professional football with the New England Patriots and the Oakland Raiders. While with the Patriots, Mr. Miller was the leading rusher and 2nd leading pass receiver. Following a trade to the Oakland Raiders, Mr. Miller was a member of the AFL All Star Team in 1961; Captain of the Oakland Raiders in 1963-65 and Most Valuable Player of the Oakland Raiders in 1965.
Upon completing his football career, Mr. Miller served as General Counsel to the American Football League Players Association from 1965 to 1970. In 1970, Mr. Miller was elected General Counsel to the National Football League Players Association ("NFLPA"). Mr. Miller consolidated the two existing Players Associations into the NFLPA and handled all of the collective bargaining and labor negotiations for the NFLPA through 1972. Mr. Miller also served as legal counsel to the World Football League Players Association and worked for NBC television as a color commentator for NFL games. Mr. Miller was a successful amateur race driver and was the 1992 Central Division SCCA CSR Champion and winner of the Robert D. Collins Memorial Trophy. Mr. Miller is a member of the Boston College Hall of Fame and a member of the Board of Directors of the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.
Mr. Miller and his law firm are considered one of the preeminent sports law firms in the United States. Mr. Miller has represented numerous athletes in connection with NFL football, NHL Hockey and other sports. Mr. Miller acted as legal counsel for Sprint (Nextel) in connection with Sprint’s title sponsorship of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. Mr. Miller also acted as legal counsel for Action Performance Companies, Inc. prior to their acquisition by Motorsports Authentics, Inc. Mr. Miller represented Rob Kauffman in purchasing a substantial interest in Michael Waltrip Racing and represented Michael Waltrip Racing Holdings until it ceased operations. Mr. Miller and his firm also represent RK Motors, LLC of Charlotte, North Carolina. Mr. Miller has substantial experience in negotiating, drafting and consummating Driver Agreements; Personal Services Agreements; Sponsorship Agreements; Manufacturing Agreements; Licensing Agreements, Engine Lease Agreements and other agreements utilized in the motorsports industry.
Mr. Miller represents or has represented a substantial number of NASCAR teams and drivers including Jimmie Johnson, (seven time consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2016); Furniture Row Racing; Chad Knaus ; Clint Bowyer (2007 3rd place; 2008 Nationwide Series Champion; 2012 Cup Series 2nd Place); Erik Jones (NASCAR Camping World Truck Champion 2015 and NASCAR Monster Energy Series Rookie of the Year 2017); Ryan Newman; Kurt Busch (NASCAR Cup Series Champion 2004) William Byron, Kasey Kahne, Ryan Reed, Noah Gragson, Toni Breidinger, Casey Mears, David Gilliland, Martin Truex, Jr., Max Papis, Formula One driver, Sergio Perez, Bill Lester, Calvin Wells; Robert Yates Racing; Mark McArdle; and Robbie Loomis, and Venturini Motorsports. Mr. Miller has diverse securities experience including securities arbitration, regulatory compliance, SRO investigations, restrictive covenant litigation, real estate syndication, venture capital, public offerings, Regulation D offerings and Williams Act compliance. Mr. Miller serves as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association and he has acted as local counsel for UBS Financial Services.
Mr. Miller has extensive experience in litigation, including, franchise regulation, motor vehicle dealer disputes pursuant to applicable Michigan and Federal law, contract disputes, shareholder suits, injunctive actions, restrictive covenants and non-compete agreements, wrongful discharge and securities litigation.
Mr. Miller and his wife, Susan and their eighteen year-old son, Shane currently make their home in Orchard Lake, Michigan.
